Vice President, Development
Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President, Development will help to develop the next generation of leaders in Canada with one of Canada’s most recognized charitable brands. This strategic leadership position will collaborate with JA Charter offices to build a National Integrated Development Plan that will ultimately diversify and expand the existing individual, foundation, corporate and government donor portfolio. The position will also have strategic oversight of JA Canada’s signature business recognition event – the Canadian Business Hall of Fame.

Vice President, Development
Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President, Development will help to develop the next generation of leaders in Canada with one of Canada’s most recognized charitable brands. Corporate, community and individual engagement is a key component of JA’s program delivery which utilizes the time and talent of over 15,000 volunteers each year.
JA Campus, an integrated digital learning platform will allow JA Canada and its Charter offices to use technology to enhance their program delivery and provide their volunteers with more flexible training options. This transformational initiative will significantly expand student reach across Canada via renewed and new, leading-edge programs.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership
- Actively participate and contribute to the success of the JA Canada senior leadership team.
- Build trust, engagement, and effectiveness among staff and across JA Canada.
- Conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the JA Canada culture, mission, and values.
- Provide leadership to the department’s annual performance management program that achieves focused results and promotes innovation and a climate of learning.
- Work in a collaborative manner with JA Canada employees, board members, volunteers and JA Charter Leaders and staff, efficiently, effectively and to achieve desired strategic and operational results.
- Source and inspire department staff to achieve annual financial and programmatic goals.
- Act with fairness, integrity, transparency, and take responsibility for ensuring decisions are made in a manner maintaining the highest ethical standards in keeping with generally accepted professional practice.
Resource Generation
- Establish and direct operational plans, processes, and policies in support of the resource development goals.
- Develop and implement strategies and work plans that engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of corporate, foundation, government, and individual prospective donors.
- Integrate strategies and programs nationally to ensure they are complementing local Charter efforts and designed to raise incremental funding.
- Provide management oversight of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame (CBHF) specifically regarding its revenue development strategy. Work closely with the CEO and Director of Events and Marketing on the CBHF planning, execution, media, and stewardship.
- Ensure Raiser’s Edge and donor data management processes are current and executed accurately and consistently in support of the resource development objectives.
- Foster and maintain a collaborative partnership with the marketing and communications team to build brand, achieve resource development objectives, and create timely, accurate, and relevant communication channels.
Donor Relations and Stewardship
- Leverage JA Canada’s excellent reputation to cultivate relationships and develop new partnerships and donors.
- Provide leadership and support to the President and CEO, employees, volunteers, the Board of Directors, and Foundation members, to ensure prospects are identified and effectively moved through the pipeline.
- Strategic alignment and leveraging of Board of Directors and signature events.
- Provide outstanding donor support and service through best-in-class stewardship.
- Ensure an effective and timely donor recognition program is executed.
Charter Engagement and Support
- Provide leadership and support to the Charters to grow a shared, effective national resource development culture to achieve mutually beneficial results.
- Maintain a relationship-build approach with JA Charters to enhance the collaborative prospect management process.
- Provide case for support materials and collateral documentation to Charters to ensure effective donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and reporting.
Fiscal and Metrics
- Achieve planned financial, donor, and activity goals.
- Implement and maintain plans and systems that ensure results are measured, achieved, and reported.
- Prepare timely reports and presentations, as required.
- Routinely track and report on metrics and activity.
- Manage all related service contracts and serve as the point of contact for clients.
Research and Continuous Improvement
- Provide leadership to research initiatives building a climate of continuous improvement behaviour and fact-based decision-making.
- Stay abreast of advances in technology and general market conditions as they relate to resource development and JA’s on-going success.
Experience
- Minimum of 10 years’ demonstrated experience in fund development, effectively building and leading the growth of all aspects of a diverse resource development program.
- Experience at a complex, federated, not-for-profit organization preferred, knowing the unique challenges and approaches that are needed for success.
- At least 5 years in a senior management role with demonstrated leadership and supervision skills.
- Extensive experience successfully cultivating and securing major donations ($1M+ gifts) from high-net-worth individuals and corporations.
- Realized success in developing and leading multi-million-dollar campaigns.
- Experience in government and foundation grant and proposal writing.

- Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in French is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, works proactively, and manages competing priorities.
- Project management and campaign experience.
- Strong business acumen and results-oriented.
- University undergraduate is a minimum requirement. Graduate level designation is considered an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft products, Raiser’s Edge, and other CRM or ERP applications.
- Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) accreditation preferred.
- Active professional member in nationally recognized associations considered an asset (i.e. AFP, CAGP).
Before you Apply
Compensation
- The hiring range for this role is $120,000 - $200,000 plus benefits. Compensation will be determined by the candidate's experience.
Location of Role
- This position will be a REMOTE, home-based position. The candidate must have a location within their residence (or alternate location) with appropriate work environment for required focus away from distractions to allow productivity. JA Canada will provide a laptop, along with a monthly stipend to assist with communications costs.
- The VP Development can reside anywhere in Canada with reasonable access to an airport.
